You used to be able to drag and drop folders to the "bookmarks" pane in Nautilus... but you can't any more. At least, I can't. However, <a href="http://naveenubuntu.blogspot.com/2012/05/ubuntu-1204-adding-bookmarksshortcuts.html">you can add bookmarks using control-D</a> -- from within the folder you wish to bookmark.
